Stuff You Can Use: Washed Up Prayer Station

I'm a big believer in the power of experiential learning. To this end, instead of giving a talk about prayer, I'd much rather create a series of prayer stations designed to give students the opportunity to pray in a variety of ways.

Over the next several weeks, I'll be posting some of my favorite prayer stations that I've written. Prayer stations can be used collectively during a prayer night or individually as part of a larger lesson. For example: This particular prayer station was used as part of a prayer experience during a junior high & high school winter retreat focused on baptism. 

Prayer Station: Washed Up 

Themes: Baptism, Sin, Forgiveness 

Scripture Link: Matthew 3:2 & 11 

Supplies: Washable markers, soap, bucket filled with water 

Directions:

When John the Baptist baptized people, he did so for the forgiveness of sins. He told people, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near!” and “I baptize you with water for repentance” (Matthew 3:2 & 11).

Think about your life.

How have you screwed up recently?

Take a marker and make a list of of the ways you have recently screwed up on your hand and arm.

After each thing you list, ask God for forgiveness.

Then use the washcloths, soap, and water to wash those sins off your hand and arm, to symbolize the way in which baptism washes away our sins.

Thank God for the gift of baptism – and for Jesus' death on the cross – and the way in which our sins are forgiven.
