I am a big believer in the power of experiential learning. To this end, instead of giving a talk about prayer, I'd much rather create a series of prayer stations designed to give students the opportunity to pray in a variety of ways.
Over the next several weeks, I'll be posting some of my favorite prayer stations. Prayer stations can be used collectively during a prayer night or individually, as part of a larger lesson.
Prayer Station: Mirror, Mirror On The Wall
Scripture Link: Luke 19:1-10
Themes: Identity; Self-Image
Supplies:
Small mirror (hand-held, large enough for multiple people to write on)
Sharpie
Small wooden doll
Directions:
In Luke 19:1-10, we meet Zacchaeus, a tax collector who most everyone (including himself) would have considered to be a liar and a cheat who was unworthy & unloved.
Look in the mirror at yourself. When you look in the mirror, what do you see?
Take a sharpie and write a few words on the mirror to describe how you see yourself.
Then consider the Gospel.
How do you think Jesus saw Zacchaeus? Why?
How do you think Jesus sees you? Why?
Take your sharpie and write down how you think Jesus sees you on the wooden doll.
Then read through all the words written on the wooden doll as a reminder that this is how Jesus sees you.
