Rest

Today, I'm linking up with Kate Motaung's Five Minute Friday. The rules: Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.

This week's prompt: Rest.

Five Minute Friday 4 300x300

I woke up with a migraine yesterday, the worst I've had in a long time.

I'm pretty certain as to what caused it: Exhaustion.

I returned from leading a week-long Peacemaking trip in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Sunday I dove back into family life (I missed my people so much!). Monday ushered in the start of a grueling work week. I've been going nonstop ever since, with nary a moment to catch my breath, let alone reflect on all that God did during the trip last week.

I'm attending meetings, preaching on Sunday, and preparing for the next summer mission trip – our logistics meeting is tonight. I'm working on book #3 (a student leadership book with Abingdon Press that I'm crazy excited to be writing). It's crunch time for a research project with Arbor. I'm also knee-deep in dirty diapers, sweaty hands, messy faces, and my daughter's irresistible smile.

It's all work I love.

It's all work that matters.

And yet, I can't deny that I'm tired.

So today I'll do the thing I need most in the world.

I'll rest.

For a mere three hours this afternoon, I'll turn off my laptop and unashamedly delight in my daughter.

Tomorrow, I'll do the same thing, for a bit longer.

As I do, I'll also squirrel a way a few minutes to get lost in the new book I just started reading... and to walk and let my thoughts swirl.

Doing so will allow me to depend on God – to recognize my own limitations and the fact that I don't have to do everything; that I actually can't do everything; that maybe I actually shouldn't even try.

It may not seem like much, but I'll trust that it's enough; I'm enough; and most certainly, God is enough.
